Somnath Jyotirlinga
Sacred History
Somnath Temple is considered the first among the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
The temple is located in Prabhas Patan on the western coast of India along the shores of the Arabian Sea.
The name Somnath means 'Lord of the Moon'.
The temple represents the divine power of Shiva as the protector and healer of the Moon God.
Somnath has a long and powerful history and is considered a symbol of faith, resilience, and devotion.

Story of Somnath
According to ancient legends, the Moon God Chandra married the 27 daughters of Daksha.
However, Chandra loved only one of them, Rohini, and neglected the others, which angered Daksha.
Daksha cursed Chandra, causing him to lose his brightness and slowly fade away.
Seeking relief from the curse, Chandra prayed intensely to Lord Shiva at this sacred place.
Pleased with his devotion, Shiva partially removed the curse and restored the Moon’s brightness.
From that moment, the Moon began its cycle of waxing and waning.
To honor Lord Shiva, Chandra built the Somnath Temple, which became the first Jyotirlinga.
