Sacred Jyotirlinga
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga
Sacred History
Omkareshwar Temple is one of the sacred 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
The temple is located on Mandhata Island in the holy Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh.
What makes Omkareshwar unique is that the island itself is shaped like the sacred Hindu symbol 'Om (ॐ)', which represents the universal sound of creation.
Devotees believe that this Jyotirlinga symbolizes the cosmic vibration and divine energy of the universe.

Story of Omkareshwar
According to ancient legends, there was a powerful king named Mandhata who ruled the region with devotion and righteousness.
He performed deep penance and intense prayers to Shiva on the banks of the Narmada River.
Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before him and manifested in the form of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga to bless the land and its devotees.
Another legend says that the Devas (gods) prayed to Lord Shiva here to defeat powerful demons disturbing the universe.
Shiva then appeared and protected the world from these negative forces.
Island Shaped Like Om
The island of Mandhata is believed to resemble the sacred symbol Om, representing the origin of creation.
Power of the Narmada River
The Narmada River is considered one of the holiest rivers in India. Bathing in its waters is believed to cleanse sins and purify the soul.
Twin Temples
The island houses two important temples – Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar – both considered spiritually significant.
