Sacred History

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is one of the sacred 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

The temple is located near the holy city of Dwarka on the western coast of India.

The name Nageshwar comes from the word 'Naga', meaning serpent.

The Legend

Story of Nageshwar

According to ancient legends, there was a powerful demon named Daruka who lived in a forest called Darukavana.

The demon began torturing sages and devotees who worshipped Shiva, imprisoning many of them.

Among the prisoners was a devoted follower of Shiva named Supriya who continued chanting the name of Lord Shiva even while imprisoned.

Moved by the intense devotion of his follower, Lord Shiva appeared and defeated the demon Daruka, protecting the devotees.

After this victory, Shiva manifested there as Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, promising to protect his devotees from evil forces.
