Sacred Jyotirlinga
Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga
Sacred History
Mallikarjuna Temple is one of the sacred 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
The temple is located on the Srisailam mountain along the banks of the holy Krishna River.
This temple is unique because it represents the divine presence of Shiva along with Parvati.
The name Mallikarjuna comes from Mallika, another name for Goddess Parvati, and Arjuna, a name of Lord Shiva.
Together they symbolize the union of divine masculine and feminine energies.

Story of Mallikarjuna
The legend of Mallikarjuna is connected with the sons of Shiva and Parvati — Ganesha and Kartikeya.
Once a discussion arose about who should be married first. Their parents decided that whoever circled the entire world first would get married first.
Kartikeya immediately set out on his peacock to travel around the world.
However, Ganesha simply circled his parents, saying that they represented the entire universe.
Impressed by his wisdom, Shiva and Parvati declared Ganesha the winner.
When Kartikeya returned and learned about this, he became upset and left for the Srisailam mountains.
To console their son, Shiva and Parvati came to Srisailam and stayed there as Mallikarjuna, blessing devotees forever.
