Story of Bhimashankar
According to Hindu mythology, there was a powerful demon named Bhima, the son of Kumbhakarna (brother of Ravana).
After learning about his father's death at the hands of Rama, Bhima became extremely angry and began performing severe penance to gain immense power.
After receiving blessings from Brahma, Bhima became invincible and started terrorizing sages and devotees.
One of his victims was a great devotee of Shiva named Kamarupeshwar, who continued worshipping Shiva even while imprisoned by Bhima.
Furious at this devotion, Bhima tried to destroy the Shiva Lingam.
At that moment, Lord Shiva manifested from the Lingam and killed the demon Bhima.
After defeating him, Shiva manifested here as Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga.
