Sacred History
Somnath is located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra, Gujarat, and holds a distinguished place in Hindu history as one of the most revered Jyotirlings of Lord Shiva. The temple's history dates back to the times of the Vedic period, where the first temple was constructed by Lord Moon (Chandra Dev). This holy site has endured repeated destruction by invaders but was always rebuilt, symbolizing not only resilience but the triumph of faith. The Somnath temple stands as a testament to the eternal reverence and devotion that has flowed through the ages from the time of Lord Krishna to the present day. It was known as the 'Eternal Light' and is considered the first of the twelve Jyotirlings.
Story of Somnath Jyotirlinga
According to the myth, Lord Moon (Chandra Dev) was once cursed by his father-in-law, Daksha, which made him lose his luster. Seeking redemption, Lord Moon performed a grand yajna at this sacred spot. Impressed by his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of the Jyotirling and blessed Moon with his full glory, restoring his brilliance. Somnath is thus considered a symbol of eternal light, purity, and renewal. The temple is not just a place of worship but a symbol of the timeless presence of Lord Shiva.
